Tools/Equipment You Will Need on the Roof
- Crayon (yellow or red)
- Circular saw or saber saw
- Utility knife or scissors
- Electric hand drill with screwdriver bits
- Hammer
- 16 penny nails
- Staple gun
- 1 ¼" pan head screws
- Extension ladder
Step 1: Identify Location for the Skylight Tube
- Inside the house, identify the location in the room or hallway where you want to place the skylight tube.
- Use a nail to punch a hole through the ceiling. Fit a stiff wire through the hole into the attic.
- In the attic, locate the wire sticking out of the ceiling. Measure the distance between joists to make sure there is a clearance of 14" for the riser of the bottom ring of the skylight. Move any minor obstructions away from the opening.
- If there are any major obstructions (electrical, heating duct, plumbing), identify a different location for the skylight.
- Extend the wire upward from the ceiling, through the attic, to a point between the rafters. Make sure that there are no obstructions in this area of the attic where the skylight is to be located. Also make sure that there are no outside obstructions such as roof valleys or ridges in the area of the roof where you will position skylight. Mark this location with a marker or crayon.
- While in the attic, drill a hole through roofing materials at the location marked by the wire. Extend the wire through roof so that the location for the skylight will be easy to find.
Step 2: Build Curb
- Cut a 2 x 6 into four pieces: two lengths of 14 1/2” and two lengths of 17 1/2”
- Nail the 2 x 6 pieces together to form a square curb with an inside dimension of 14 1/2" x 14 1/2” using two nails per side.
Step 3: Cut Hole in Roof (composition roof material)
- On the roof, lay the wood curb on the roof and center it over the wire extending up from the attic. The curb should be located between the roof rafters. You will need to make two separate cuts.
- First cut: Place the wood curb over the area where the skylight will be located. Use a crayon to trace lines 1/2 “ outside of each side of the wood curb. Remove the curb. Use a skill saw to cut through the roof shingles outside the crayon trace. Adjust the saw blade to cut only the shingles. DO NOT cut the underlying wood sheathing of the roof. Remove all of the shingles within the cut area.
- Second cut: Replace the wood curb inside of the area where the shingles have been removed. Center the curb in this area. Use a crayon to trace around the inside opening of the curb. Remove the curb and cut through the wood sheathing along the crayon trace. Now you have a hole in the roof through which the skylight tube liner will fit.
Step 4: Install the Flashing Kit
- The flashing kit consists of top and bottom saddles and side step flashing components.
After the hole is cut, install the top saddle before securing the curb to the roof. Install all of the flashing kit components so that the roof sheds water. The tops of all flashing components should underlap the next successively higher piece of flashing or shingle and the bottoms of each piece of flashing should overlap each successively lower piece of flashing or shingle. Use self-tapping screws to secure the tops of the flashing to the curb. Then screw down the bottom saddle through the roofing material.
Step 5: Secure Wood Curb to Roof
- Replace the curb over the hole cut into the roof. Nail the inside of the curb to the wood sheathing with 16 penny nails. Toe in or angle the nails through the bottom of the curb into the underlying wood sheathing. Use two nails along each side of the curb. Now your curb is secure.
Step 6: Liner Placement
- Take the folded, reflective liner onto the roof and open it up. Lower the liner into the attic through the inside of the wood curb. The liner should be long enough to pass through the ceiling.
- Cut the corners of the liner down to the top of the curb and lay the liner flaps created by the cuts over the top of the curb. Secure liner to curb using staples. Use a utility knife or scissors to trim off excess liner extending beyond top width of the curb.
- Cut four 2” x 2” squares from the excess liner. Staple one of the four squares of liner material to each of the four corners of the curb to create a complete weather seal before installing the skylight
- Place the skylight on top of the curb and center it. Make sure that any space between the skylight and the curb is evenly distributed on all sides. Fasten the skylight to the curb using pan head screws.
Step 7: Install Bottom Ring (No framing necessary)
- Go back into the room or hallway where the nail hole was placed in the ceiling. Use the bottom ring included in the kit as a template. Place the bottom ring over the nail hole and center it within the hallway or room. Take a pencil and lightly trace along the inside of the bottom ring on the ceiling.
- Use a keyhole saw to cut out the area traced by the pencil, starting at the nail hole in the center. Adjust the hole size as needed, so that the riser of the bottom ring fits into the opening.
- Hold the bottom ring flush with the ceiling. Reach into the opening and attach the riser of the bottom ring to the ceiling joists using pan head screws. Pre-drilled holes in the riser are provided for your convenience.
- Cut a piece of 2 x 4 lumber into two lengths. If installing a 14 x 14 tube, make the pieces 14” in length. If installing a 22 x 22 tube, make the pieces 22” in length. On sides without access to joists for attachment, place one of the pieces of 2 x 4 wood behind the riser to sandwich the ceiling drywall against the decorative face of the bottom ring. Secure the riser of the bottom ring to the 2 x 4 block using pan head screws. Repeat this method for each side of the bottom ring that is not tied into the ceiling joists.
Step 8: Attaching the Liner to the Bottom Ring
- Reach through the bottom ring and retrieve the reflective liner from the attic. Fit the liner evenly along the inside of the bottom ring. Trim off any excess liner using a utility knife or scissors. Then push the liner back into the attic out of the way.
- Remove the paper backing from the tape located along the inside of the bottom ring, and carefully adhere the liner to the tape. Do this for each side of the bottom ring.
- Press the liner firmly against the tape for a secure fit.
- Now place the diffuser panel through the opening in the bottom ring, flush with the ceiling.
Congratulations. You are finished!
